Tuesday’s elections could produce a paradox between progressive reform and nanny government.  Berkeley, California easily passed an increased tax on sugary soda drinks. Oregon, Alaska, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Territory of Guam passed laws to join the purple haze in Colorado and Washington State.  There may be two different lobbying groups that haven’t realized they’re at odds. One group wants to ban soda because it has sugar. Another group wants to legalize a plant that will make people Jones for junk food and storm convenience stores. If the two groups ever come to blows, it won’t be much of a fight. The anti-soda lobby won’t be amped on sugar and caffeine and the potheads will be too mellow to rumble. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who failed to ban soda from the Big Apple, donated $647,000 toward Berkeley’s successful new soda tax. I’m E. Curtis Johnson. Potheads beware. Bloomberg is the kind of control freak that could prove marijuana is a gateway to hard drugs, like sugar.
