In Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol,” Ebenezer Scrooge wishes that everyone who walks around with Merry Christmas on their lips would be boiled in their own pudding with a stake of holly driven through their hearts. I’m going Scrooge on Cyber Monday. Friday was Black Friday. We were supposed shop local retailers for Christmas presents. Today is Cyber Monday. We’re supposed buy presents online. Bah, Humbug! I believe in free and open markets. However, when we buy online we literally damage the communities we live in by sending our tax dollars to other towns. Money spent online pays for some other city’s essential services and public infrastructure. Every dollar spent in a local economy creates four dollars that spreads to keep other businesses open. Black Friday keeps our neighbors working. Cyber Monday? Not so much. I’m E. Curtis Johnson. If calling Cyber Monday a humbug upsets you, I’ll understand if you drive a stake of holly through my heart. I think they sell holly stake kits on Amazon.com.
