AKRON, Ohio (AP) — The attorney for an Ohio man accused of shooting his wife to death in her hospital bed says his client acted out of "deep love."

John Wise has been charged with aggravated murder. Investigators are looking into whether the 66-year-old shot his wife in a mercy killing.

His attorney, Paul Adamson, said after a brief court hearing Wednesday that he's "thoroughly convinced he's a good man."

Adamson says that Wise has always acted "out of deep love, including the events that just recently transpired."

Wise appeared before a municipal court judge in Akron via video from jail Wednesday morning on the aggravated murder count. No plea was entered. He must return to court Aug. 22.
