Don’t tell 9-year-old Spencer Collins, of Leawood, Kansas that you can’t fight city hall.  Spencer loves reading and wanted to share his love of books with others. His grandfather built him a “free library”  capable of holding a few books. With a sign that said,” Take A Book, Leave A Book” the library was placed in the front yard. The “free library” looks like a birdhouse on a stool.  However, The City of Leawood’s zoning laws prohibit buildings that aren’t attached to homes. Spencer’s library is a freestanding structure and is technically, illegal.

The Collins family was cited and ordered to remove the “building.” Now the free library is in the garge and the family is off to city hall to fight the ordinance. I hope Spencer Collins and his family can reopen the free library and close the book on anal-retentive city ordinances.

My name is E. Curtis Johnson. Even if the Collins family can’t fight city hall, they can feed the pigeons Ex-lax. I think read that in a book.
