According to ABC news, over 6500 unaccompanied minors were detained for crossing illegally into the United States In 2011. An estimated 60,000 unaccompanied minors will cross America’s southern border by the end of the year. Some believe the increase is the combination of civil and economic unrest in Central America. Many were sent here because desperate parents paid criminals to smuggle them, based on the mistaken belief that the Dream Act will provide these children with U.S. citizenship.

Somewhere between the unintended consequences of liberal economic policy, and conservative rhetoric of a closed border, are innocent children. America’s southern border is clearly defined. The border between immigration policy and a humanitarian solution is quite blurry. How ironic. These children survived at the hands of human coyotes, only to find that their fate now rests with American politicians. Only history will tell which group they were safer with.
