Will the state that invented no-fault divorce become six states? Silicon Valley venture capitalist, Tim Draper, has obtained the 808,000 signatures needed to put the initiative on the November ballot.  Since statehood, dividing California has been proposed about 200 times. And we wonder why California’s psychoanalysis industry is thriving?

It is unlikely enough Californians will vote for the initiative and it’s more improbable that Congress – which has the final say – would approve. Image and world perception are the ultimate reasons splitting the state will fail.  California is a persona, not just a geographic area. Many Californians are addicted to the state’s image. How ironic: infamous for phoniness, California ultimately won’t divorce because each part wants to believe it’s “real” California. Just like a Beverly Hills couple can’t divorce and get alternating weekend custody of the fake breasts and cosmetic surgery, California won’t divide.

I’m E. Curtis Johnson. Don’t worry, California is still nutty and cracked, but it won’t split into six parts.
