Here’s an example of how politically correct hiring quotas can produce unintended and deadly consequences. According to the New York Post, New York’s fire department has stopped requiring probationary firefighters to pass the job-related physical-skills test. The physical requirement is based on candidate’s ability, with a limited air supply, to remove a 270-pound person from a burning building. Ninety-five percent of men pass, but only 57% of women pass. To increase the number of women on the force, the bar on a lifesaving requirement is lowered. Here’s the irony. What purports to be a fair hiring practice, is terribly unfair to victims of fire. When an arbitrary employment quota becomes more important than human life, our values are backwards. As a side note, the New York Post’s credibility is slightly above the average grocery store tabloid. I’m E. Curtis Johnson. If the New York Post caught ablaze, would it be a rag fire?
