Election season is a reminder that the average American makes complex and important decisions based on little more than vagaries and innuendo. Political ads prove it. The typical TV and radio political ad sounds something like this. “Vote for candidate X! He once saved a bus full of nuns from going over a cliff.  However, his opponent, candidate Y, enjoys biting off puppies tails.” The formula is simple: aggrandize a trait or achievement of the candidate while demonizing the opponent.  Political billboards, posters, and yard signs are worse. These messages usually include only the name of the candidate and the title of the office sought. Chicken squat is every pot is more accurate than a chicken in every pot. The first thing that should scare us is that political handlers believe the average voter will fall for trite, meaningless messages, or remember only the name of a candidate at the ballot box.  The second scary thing is that they’re right. I’m E. Curtis Johnson and I approve of this disapproving message.
