George Orwell’s book, “1984,” was a commentary about Communism. However, the book’s message has application today. As a response to rioting in Ferguson, Missouri, several reports are coming out accusing St. Louis County Police of ordering media and citizens to cease video recording police activity.

Unfortunately, the events in Ferguson aren't the only incidences where police have tried to prevent police actions from being recorded. Unless a photographer is interfering with a police, recording police activity is a constitutional right, backed up by several Supreme Court decisions. Not only should we question authority, we should record it. In Orwell’s “1984,” Big Brother watched citizens with camera’s everywhere. In 2014, citizens are watching Big Brother with camera’s everywhere. I doubt Orwell saw that plot twist coming.

I’m E. Curtis Johnson. Instead of spinning, I wonder if George Orwell is smiling in his grave?
