According to Google, Montana is the second highest ranking state for searches pertaining to gardening. Obviously, we have plenty of room as a state, but for those in Billings proper, especially the apartment dwellers, it's a bit more of a challenge.

One option that us folks with limited space have is the Community Garden at Amend Park. There are various plot sizes available: 10'x10', 20'x20' and 3'x6' raised beds, plus a greenhouse.  The fees are very reasonable ($10 to $40 depending on plot size) and can be waived based on your income situation.

In addition to the space to grow your garden, they also provide some workshops for instruction so you're welcome regardless of your skill level.

I have been told that Yellowstone County soil is nowhere near as fertile as Carbon County soil, but I've never been able to test that statement for myself. Just like anything else in life, I think it's just a matter of how good you are.  Based on my tomato plants last year, I'm not sure how well I'd do anywhere.

Whether your motivation is financial (have you bought a yellow bell pepper recently?), better health, the satisfaction of being more self-sufficient, or some combination of all, it's definitely a rewarding activity.

If you are an experienced gardener in Yellowstone county, please share a tip or two for those of us who are getting started.
