A 14 year-old girl from Utah was killed on Monday after falling rocks struck her family’s vehicle while traveling on Glacier National Park’s Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Park spokesperson Lauren Alley said the incident occurred just after 7:00 p.m. Monday night.

“It’s a very sad day here at the park,” began Alley. “We had a significant rock fall near the east tunnel on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. A lot of rocks fell onto a passing vehicle and unfortunately, a 14 year-old girl died.”

A press release indicated that the rocks struck the top of the vehicle and shattered the rear windshield, fatally injuring the girl. A.L.E.R.T. air ambulance responded, but because of the girl’s unstable condition, could not transport her, so she was taken by ground ambulance, but unfortunately, she died en route to the hospital. The two adults suffered bruises and were transported via ambulance from Babb and Browning. The two minor children also sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.

“There was a significant bystander response and rangers also responded, and of course, we were calling for air and ground ambulance service, as well,” she said. “The Going-to-the-Sun Road was closed for about three hours on Monday night. Obviously, we needed to care for the patients on the scene, and our road crew needed to go up and remove the rocks and a tow truck needed to go up and remove the vehicle.”

The park estimated that the amount of fallen rock could have filled the bed of a pickup truck. The rocks fell from an unknown height from the mountains above the road.

The name of the victim is being withheld and will be released after all her family members have been notified.

Alley said the last injury from rock fall occurred in 1996 near Logan Pass.
