University of Montana Daycare Reopens After Asbestos Cleanup

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — A daycare center has reopened at the University of Montana more than eight months after it was shut down because of asbestos contamination.

The Missoulian reports the center for school employees’ toddlers and preschoolers has returned to McGill Hall after being housed in the College of Education and Human Sciences building since Jan. 28.

The newspaper reports unacceptable levels of asbestos were found in surface tests of McGill Hall, but not in the air.

UM construction project manager Brad Evanger says all the materials that tested positive were removed from the daycare area, including the windows.

Workers also added an infant care space to the center and made other modifications for a total cost of $700,000.

University spokeswoman Paula Short says the project was finished just in time for the start of the fall semester.
