On Wednesday afternoon, the Missoula Police Department released the following information regarding the fatal shooting that occurred in the 600 block of Blaine Street on Sunday, November 18.

‘Officer Joseph Burger has been placed on paid administrative leave. Officer Burger has been with the Missoula Police department for three years in December.

This action is per Missoula Police Department protocols and past practice for officers involved in critical incidents.

This leave is pending further information received through an investigation being conducted by the Montana Department of Justice – Division of Criminal Investigations.

An internal review of the incident is also being conducted.’

Killed in the incident was 49 year-old Janessa M. Cooper.
