While Sidney was ranked the fourth safest city in the Big Sky, and in the top 25th percentile in the U.S., they had the highest increase in Violent Crime Trend, 195 percent, with 37 violent crimes in 2018. Laurel was ranked #13 on the list with Violent Crimes down more than 50 percent. According to the study, Violent Crimes are up 16.3 percent in Billings while Property Crimes rose by 5.1 percent.
Due to Montana being so large, its population density is a low seven people per square mile. This disqualifies most of the cities within the state to rank amongst the safest cities in the nation. However, the 3 bigger cities of the state did make it onto the top 750 safest cities in the country. Within the state, the 25 safest cities range from an impressively high safety score of 95.9, down to 57.08. Twenty of those cities have safety rankings above 70, which is very good. - SafeHome.org
