You’ve got all your business paperwork ready, now, where’s the nearest Notary Public?

That answer will change on October 1, as Montana Secretary of State Corey Stapleton has announced the date that Remote Online Notarization will begin in Montana.

Deputy Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen described the new technology on Wednesday from her office in Helena.

“In this day and age, our customers don’t want to be inhibited by eight to five office hours, they deserve service 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Jacobsen. “That’s what remote notarization does. The new law will take effect on October first and all Montana notaries will offer remote online notarization.”

Jacobsen describes how the new technology will work.

“Time and distance will no longer hold up time-sensitive transactions,” she said. “The personal appearance requirement for the signer and the notary by means of a two-way audio visual communication, and the documents can be digitally signed without any paper, notarized and transmitted to the end user in a matter of minutes.”

Jacobsen said the both the notary and the client will be able to download a proprietary app specifically for notarization.

“It’s similar to Face Time, but there’s an actual notary app that both the customer and the notary will down load,” she said.

Jacobsen said there will be a symposium to learn the ins and outs of the new Remote Online Notarization next week in Helena.

“On September 24th the office is going to host a RON (Remote Online Notarization) one-day symposium,” she said. “It’s going to be held at the Delta Hotel in Helena. All notaries are invited to attend. I think we have over a hundred notaries signed up to attend so far, but we’re encouraging others to sign up. We’ll be covering all the technicalities in the process for implementing the new technology.”
