Montana AG Advocates For Disposal Of Prescription Drugs

Saturday April 30, is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Montana Attorney General Tim Fox is encouraging people to drop off all their unused, unwanted, and out of date prescription drugs.

“This is really important for a lot of reasons,” said Fox. “Not the least of which is that about 53% of Americans that abuse prescription pain killers get them from a friend or family members for free. They take them out of medicine cabinets and purses and other places where they’re unsecured.”

According to Fox, those planning to drop off their prescription drugs will be completely anonymous and their privacy will be protected. Fox says local police will be in charge of handling these drop boxes around the state.

“We are fortunate because law enforcement in the local communities come out and help and make sure that these items are secure,” Fox said. “I want Montanan’s to know that this is an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their unused and unwanted prescription drugs. We don’t want Montanan’s to be dropping them down the sinks and toilets.”

Year round, there are 45 permanent drop boxes in Montana, three of which happen to be in Missoula.  They are located at the Missoula Police Department, Granite Pharmacy, and The Health Service Pharmacy at the University of Montana.
