34 year-old Winston Ritter is in the Missoula County Jail on Independence Day, charged with three felonies, following an armed confrontation with Missoula law enforcement personnel.

Corporal Josh Volinkaty with the Missoula County Sheriff's Office said the incident began Sunday evening, with a call to 9-1-1 about a possible break-in.

"Deputies responded to a reported burglary near Target Range School at a trailer park," Volinkaty said. "From the time that 9-1-1 had received the call from the complainant, some one had opened a door to the residence, and it appeared that someone had been inside. As they left to investigate the perimeter, one of the deputies made contact with a male who was sitting outside holding an AR-15 long gun."

At this point, the deputy called for backup.

"We were able to establish a perimeter with the help of the sheriff's office and other law enforcement personnel," he said. "A few minutes later, the male was observed running eastbound through a field, and he was apprehended without further incident. When he was arrested, he was in possession of an AR-15 with several rounds."

Volinkaty told KGVO News that the rifle was loaded and there was a round in the chamber upon Ritter's arrest.

Ritter is currently in the Missoula County Jail on $150,000 bond, charged with three felonies, assault with a weapon, burglary and assault on a peace officer, in addition to a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespassing.

Volinkaty said everyone involved is grateful that no one was injured and that Ritter was taken into custody without incident.

He will appear in Missoula Justice Court on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
