A man is dead after jumping into a shallow pool beneath one of Glacier National Park's most visited waterfalls. According to park spokesman Tim Rains, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, May 5.

"At 3;45 p.m.  Park Dispatch was notified that a man had jumped into a shallow pool at Running Eagle Falls, which is on the east side of the park, and sustained life threatening injuries.  Park rangers arrived on scene within minutes of the call and they performed CPR, as well as Glacier Emergency Services, Blackfeet Emergency Medical Services, Blackfeet Law Enforcement, and the Glacier County Sheriff’s department also responded to the scene."

The man was declared deceased at 4:30 p.m., not long after first responders appeared on scene. The death does not appear to be the result of foul play.

The height at which the man jumped has not yet been released Running Eagle Falls is actually two waterfalls: one of which is 40 feet high, the other is only 20 feet high. The area is surrounded by rocky outcrops that could have been jumping ledges. Raines was not sure if the man died from a head-first dive.

"The one thing that we did want to mention is that water is extremely dangerous this year," Rains said. "We have warm temperatures coming this weekend, but wear appropriate footwear because rocks can be slippery and the water is cold and fast, even though it feels warm and hot outside... take precautions."

The name and full cause of death have not yet been released.
