Billings Police Caution Residents as IRS Scammers Attempt to Make Inroads in the City [Video]

A Billings man said he has been called at least two times by someone posing as an IRS agent claiming the federal agency is filing a lawsuit against him.

"It seemed sketchy because I didn't think the IRS called people," Dillon Todd told Townsquaremedia Billings. "I was surprised and thought, 'holy cow.' I was overwhelmed with emotion. The IRS is a scary deal. They told me it was my final warning."

But, he said, his better judgment kicked in and he abruptly hung up.

Then, he received a second call, but he let it go to voicemail and kept the recording.

He said some of his friends have also received phone calls.

Billings Police Lt. Casey Hafner said he has not heard of a "rash" of scams but advises all residents to never give out information on the phone.

Ask for the person's name and get a call back number, Hafner said. Then get the number of the agency from the phone book or Internet and call that number to confirm any information that may or may not be needed.

"If it is not a scam, the caller will not be offended if you ask them for their information and call back number," Hafner said.

If someone is victimized, they should call the non-emergency number for the Billings Police Department at 657-8200 and have an officer take a report

Just last month, Missoula police warned residents of a phone scam, purportedly claiming to be from the IRS.
