The discovery of numerous dead fish in the Yellowstone River near Livingston this week has Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks biologists on alert.  Fisheries manager Travis Horton at FWP Region 3 in Bozeman said there isn’t enough information now to determine if the latest fish deaths are disease related.  FWP staff floated from Livingston to the Grey Bear Fishing Access this week and counted a total of 75 dead mountain whitefish, two dead suckers, and one dead brown trout.

Official test results won’t be conclusively reported until next week, but authorities are concerned it could be similar to tests conducted last summer when a microscopic parasite killed thousands of whitefish and suckers in that same stretch of the Yellowstone.  Biologists will float from Mallard’s Rest to Pine Creek Fishing Access sites upstream of Livingston today.
