BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — Butte authorities say an officer was wounded during a standoff after a man fired a high-caliber rifle through a wall.

The Associated Press reports  the standoff began Monday when dispatcher received a call about a suicidal man in a home.

Sheriff Ed Lester says shrapnel or bullet fragments hit the officer in the bicep after the bullet went through the wall of the house and a garage where the officer was positioned.

Lester did not name the officer, who was treated and released from a hospital.

The 38-year-old man surrendered following nearly three hours of negotiations.

Lester did not release his name.

The sheriff says the man was being treated for a self-inflicted knife wound to his abdomen and charges were expected to be filed Tuesday.
