CNN reports that a 5-month-old baby was left partially buried in the Montana mountains for at least nine hours before being discovered by a Missoula County Sheriff’s deputy, who heard the “faint cry of a baby” and followed the sound, only to find the child alive, buried face down under a pile of sticks and debris. The infant was clothed in a onesie which was wet and soiled. The infant had been in the care of 32-year-old Francis Crowley on Saturday night. Missoula Deputies received calls reporting a man acting strangely in the Lolo Hot Springs area, where authorities spent more than six hours searching for the baby. According to KPAX-TV, the child was placed in the custody of Montana Child and Family Services. Crowley, also a fugitive from Oregon, will appear in court today, charged with criminal child endangerment.
