The clip above shows some comments made on the show, 'The View,' which many people found to be offensive to nurses. One of the most offensive statements that has been echoing through every major social media outlet is "Why was she wearing a doctor's stethoscope?"

I'm now seeing some campaigns asking to boycott "The View." This is not a problem for me since I would truly rather watch an infomercial for a pot that lets you bake a potato in the microwave. However, since some people, particularly in the health care profession, have been so vocal, I thought I'd ask a friend of mine, who happens to be an operating room nurse here in Billings, how she felt about the comments made on the show.

KrisWhat is your opinion on The View and the recent controversy?

Christina V."The View is all about drama. That show has been on the brink of ending for a long time. If it hadn't been this scandal, it would have been something else. But shift-working nurses are a huge part of their audience."

KrisThe comments might not have been a direct attack, but they did make it seem as though nurses are insignificant when compared to doctors. How do you feel about what you do for a living?

Christina V."Personally, I like that most people don't have a single clue as to exactly what it is that I do for a living. Even some nurses don't know what an operating room nurse does. I pride myself on working with a team who behaves the same behind closed doors as they would if the media were watching. We fix people when the are on the brink. Doing the job well is all the affirmation that I need to know I am not wasting my life."

KrisDo you watch the show?

Christina V."I don't watch much TV at all and I really can't stand the kind of show that is 'The View.' "

KrisWhen I watched this segment, the one part that really stood out was Joy's comment about Ms. Colorado wearing a "Doctor's Stethoscope." Do you use a stethoscope in your job?

Christina V."I use a Littman Master Classic II. A cardiac stethoscope. I work in concert with the anesthesiologist during induction and emergence from anesthesia. But I have a total of 4 "Doctor's Stethoscopes". One for neonates and various others."

KrisWow! Those are some big words. They almost seem like "Doctor's Words".

Christina V."Oddly enough, the doctor's stethoscope is a very useful tool during an esophagogastroduodenoscopy."

KrisWere you personally offended by the comments made on the show?

Christina V."I wasn't offended. More just amazed at the general ignorance or these people who are so far separated from what a real working life looks like that they embarrass themselves in front of a national audience."

The shocking truth: Nurses use stethoscopes. Not just as an accessory to make them look pretty in a beauty contest, but in the actual performance of their job.

Thank you so much to Christina V. for taking the time to speak with me.

To those who are boycotting this show, please know that I support you and will never watch this show again. I, in fact, boycotted it on Aug. 11, 1997; the day the show began.
