Four Montana counties recently conducted sexual offender registry compliance checks, and 13 were found to be non-compliant, while two were arrested.

Law enforcement agencies in Beaverhead, Flathead, Lake and Roosevelt counties completed their sexual offender registry checks, and spokesperson for Montana Attorney General Tim Fox, Anastasia Burton, said the vast majority were in compliance.

"They checked on 341 sex offenders," Burton said. "The result was that 272 registered sex offenders were found to be compliant, while 63 couldn't be contacted at their residence so notices were left on their doors and the local agencies will follow up. 13 offenders were found to be non-compliant, and follow-up investigations will be conducted. Two offenders were arrested, one for failure to register and one was arrested on a federal warrant for sexual assault."

Burton said those who may be concerned about having a registered sexual or violent offender residing in their neighborhood can easily obtain that information online.

"Just visit our website and they'll find information about 2,300 sexual offenders and about 3,300 violent offenders," she said. "People can also register for free email notifications where they will be automatically updated whenever an offender moves into a zip code of their choice."

Under Montana law, convicted sexual or violent offenders must register their address of residence with local law enforcement, and failure to register is a felony.
