Ratification of the Constitution decided the need for the federal government. Today, how much federal government we need is a burning question.  There are pitfalls in letting the Feds decide local issues. To commemorate the 60thanniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the Topeka, Kansas school district wants the President, or First Lady Michelle Obama, to speak at a joint, five high school graduation ceremony.

According to the Associated Press, the Obama’s aren't the objection. Many in Topeka feel that the school board is shifting the attention from the graduates toward national issues and is politicizing a local graduation. Others object to only being able to invite two people. A combined graduation would limit the number of attendees.

I’m E. Curtis Johnson. Nothing indicates dramatic change or leaving home, like the line from the Wizard of Oz, “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” If the Topeka school board substitutes five local ceremonies with one national ceremony, Kansas may not be in Kansas anymore.
