A shot was fired at Billings Police officers last night, prompting the immediate dispatch of additional officers to the scene for backup.  The man who fired a gun at first responders on Thursday night surrendered peacefully and was taken to an area hospital, according to a press release from the Billings Police Department.

BPD Lt. Shawn Mayo said officers responded to a home alarm at the residence on the 1200 block of Eighth Street West at about 10 p.m.  When officers arrived, the unidentified man inside the house fired a shot.  A BPD hostage negotiator repeatedly called the man on the home’s phone until he answered.  He gave himself up to police at about 11:30 p.m.  Mayo said the 73-year-old man might have fired out of confusion and was taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation.
