Every July, there is a sharp uptick in the number of animals that wind up at the local pound. Missoula Animal Control Supervisor Jeff Darrah says the big problem this year, is that the pound is already full.

"We're going into the 4th of July already at capacity," Darrah said. "Generally, we have 24 normal kennels and we have about six overflow kennels. We've got about 30 dogs right now. It's kind of a scary situation to be in that position going into the busiest week of the year. We could end up with as many as 10 or 12 extra dogs."

One of the biggest reason for the surge in lost dogs in July is that many are frightened by firecrackers.

"A lot of people will leave their animals in their fenced back yard, but that may not be enough. You may entertain keeping them indoors or boarding them at a kennel if you won't be at home. On the 4th, what may normally work may not work.

There are currently more than 70 animals at the shelter and there is only room for more cats. Darrah says that now would be the perfect time for families to adopt a pet.
