Both of my parents grew up during the Great Depression. They had two rules at mealtime. (1) Take some of everything on the table and (2) eat everything on your plate. Food was never wasted. When I tried to not eat something on my plate, both, or one of my parents would say, “Starving kids in India could use that food!”

The ice bucket challenge is a fad that’s taking America by storm. For some reason, Americans are dumping five gallon buckets of ice water on each other. Someone must have thrown a wet blanket on my sense of humor. With every state in the west affected by drought, I see the ice bucket challenge is a waste of water, not a harmless fade or charity fund raising tactic. I wonder if this is how starving people in third world countries feel about hitting someone in the face with a pie.

My name is E. Curtis Johnson and I’ve become  - my parents! When I see people wasting water in the ice bucket challenge, want to say, “Stop it! Thirsty people in California could use that water.”
